Can Rhinoplasty Improve Breathing?

Your nose dominates the appearance of your face, so cosmetic rhinoplasty (nose surgery) has become popular as a way to reshape and sculpt the nose to give it the appearance you desire. What if your problem with your nose does not involve its appearance? If you cannot breathe normally through your nose, functional rhinoplasty can help

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that uses small incisions to access the nasal structure. A skilled surgeon like Dr. Vitolo can shape and contour your nose to achieve the cosmetic results you want. He can also restore proper breathing for people with structural problems with their noses. When performed to correct the appearance of the nose, the procedure is known as a cosmetic rhinoplasty. When performed to improve breathing, the procedure is called functional rhinoplasty.

Could Rhinoplasty Improve My Breathing?

Trauma or injury to the nose can change its shape and structure, blocking smooth airflow. Others have a nasal malformation that has been with them since birth. Functional rhinoplasty can improve breathing problems related to the structure of the nose

What is a Functional Rhinoplasty Like?

Dr. Vitolo performs Scar Less rhinoplasty by using incisions inside the nostrils where no one can see them. While this technique requires more surgical skill than an open rhinoplasty, it allows Dr. Vitolo to provide the Scar Less results his patients look for.

Through these incisions, Dr. Vitolo will reshape the cartilage, bone, and soft tissue of the nose to restore normal function. One common cause of breathing problems due to injury is a deviated septum, meaning that the cartilage that separates the two nostrils has been pushed into a position where it obstructs breathing.

Although you may approach Dr. Vitolo for a functional rhinoplasty, some people decide they would like to have cosmetic improvements made at the same time. Functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty can occur simultaneously. A typical procedure lasts for one and a half to two hours

What Results Will I See With Rhinoplasty Surgery?

After functional rhinoplasty, you have some swelling that prevents you from breathing easily. Once the swelling has diminished, you will notice that you can breathe through your nose much more easily. This can improve many aspects of your life, from sleep to exercise.

If you have cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time, you will see improvements in the appearance of your nose as soon as the swelling has resolved. Visible results continue to improve for several months as the nose finishes healing and the swelling fades completely

Am I a Good Candidate for a Functional Rhinoplasty?

If you have difficulty breathing through your nose, you might make a good candidate for functional rhinoplasty. This makes an excellent solution for people whose breathing problems come from a structural issue with the nose. Ideal candidates are in good health and have reasonable expectations about their results.

Professional and very experienced. Highly recommend Dr Vitolo. Will be going back!
