How Long is Recovery from an Eyelid Lift?

They say that the eyes are the window to the soul – but if your eyelids are drooping, hooded, or puffy, then they may be presenting the wrong view of who you are.

After all, even if you get enough sleep and follow a healthy lifestyle, drooping or sagging eyelids can make you look tired, unfocused, and even older than you are. What’s more, short-term solutions like eye creams and serums are rarely effective, especially in cases where sagging eyelids are more pronounced or progressed.

That’s why it may be a good idea to undergo eyelid lift surgery. This cosmetic procedure can correct obvious signs of aging, as well as create a more rejuvenated and youthful appearance. But exactly how long will that take? Let board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Vitolo guide you through what to expect from your eyelid lift recovery.

Average Duration of Eyelid Lift Recovery

According to Dr. Vitolo, the amount of downtime that’s needed for eyelid lift recovery is minimal – but only when his signature Scar Less Eyelid Lift is performed.

In the Scar Less Eyelid Lift no incisions are made in the skin, so there is NO telltale scar.   Access to the bulging fat bags is accomplished by making the incision inside the lower eyelid using an electrosurgical fiber and the fat bags (3 in each eye) are removed .

There is no need to use stitches to close the incision because the fiber causes such little damage to the tissues that the incision closes by itself within an hour.   There is usually no bleeding with the Scar Less Eyelid Lift, so patients rarely get any bruising.

The upper eyelid lift can be performed with a laser, which tightens and smoothes sagging skin. However, in cases of extreme sagging, Dr. Vitolo can either excise the excess eyelid skin or use brow lift surgery to gently lift the brow muscles, thus correcting the appearance of sagging upper eyelids.

Now let’s take a closer look at what that means for your recovery time.

The lower eyelid lift takes less than a day to recover; in fact, most of Dr. Vitolo’s patients only need a cold compress and a little sleep to see swelling disappear by the next day.

If a laser is used to smooth and correct sagging upper eyelids, patients can expect to see a scab for about one week. The scab falls off on its own, leaving behind pink, new skin.

Dr. Vitolo stresses the importance of wearing sunscreen, especially to protect brand-new skin that’s exposed from eyelid lift surgery.

“It has been one year since I made the decision to have liposuction. From beginning to end Dr. Vitolo and his staff were accommodating and professional. Everyone made me feel very comfortable and took the time to answer all of my questions. I was thinking about the procedure for awhile but after talking with Dr. Vitolo, the decision was easy. I’m an active health conscious person, but was unable to get the results I wanted with just diet and exercise. Dr. Vitolo shaped my torso and I’m very happy with results. Recovery was as expected! I think it’s important for people to know that for the best results, you really need to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.” *
