What is the Difference Between a Functional and Cosmetic Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty, or “nose job”, can alter the appearance of a person’s nose to make it more symmetrical and balanced with their facial features. It can also correct the size, shape, and overall structure of the nose to achieve the desired appearance. However, some people seek rhinoplasty because their nose does not function properly, and a surgical procedure can restore normal breathing.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Vitolo performs a Scar Less rhinoplasty, using a technique that hides all the incisions inside the nostrils to prevent any scarring. With no incisions on the outside of the nose, no one can see anything except the results. Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose by manipulating the bone, skin, and cartilage inside the nose to achieve the desired shape and appearance.

To perform Scar Less rhinoplasty, Dr. Vitolo uses his decades of experience to consult with each patient about their desired results. He then uses his skill and artistry to make these results come alive, all without ever opening the nose from the outside and working only from inside the nostrils. What is the Difference Between a Functional and Cosmetic Rhinoplasty?

People choose rhinoplasty for a variety of reasons. While cosmetic rhinoplasties make up many procedures, functional rhinoplasties require equal attention to detail. 

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

A cosmetic procedure that reshapes or sculpts the nose, cosmetic rhinoplasty achieves a more balanced appearance with a nose that matches the facial features and makes the patient feel more confident. Insurance does not cover cosmetic procedures. 

Functional Rhinoplasty

Some people struggle with a nose that does not work properly or does not let them breathe well. Causes for this can include a deviated septum, which can keep air from flowing smoothly through both nostrils, or an old injury that has left the nose misshapen. Insurance may cover some functional procedures. 

Recovery and Results

The Scar Less procedure may take longer than the “open rhinoplasty” which will leave scar on the nose, but traditional methods have developed for the convenience of the surgeon, not the patient.) The Scar Less method requires more precise work and experience and takes more time to perform. 

People may return to work within a day or two, although they will wear a cast on the nose for five days until their follow-up visit. At that point, Dr. Vitolo reveals the new nose, about 80 % of the result is visible immediately but the final result may take up to a year to be seen.
