Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

Most men will experience gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) during their lives, especially during puberty. For some men, this condition will resolve on its own. For others, gynecomastia surgery offers a solution. If you are bothered by enlarged male breasts, find out whether you will make a good candidate for surgical treatment.

What is Gynecomastia?

Hormones and other factors can cause male breast tissue to become more prominent and more visible. Many young men notice gynecomastia first during puberty. Attempts to lose weight or exercise away the excess breast tissue do not correct the problem. Only some of the tissue in enlarged male breasts is fat. The rest is glandular breast tissue that will not respond no matter how much weight you lose. Gynecomastia surgery removes the excessive breast tissue to restore a more masculine chest.

How Does Gynecomastia Surgery Work?

Dr. Vitolo specializes in minimally invasive procedures whenever possible. He uses an external ultrasonic-assisted lip-sculpture (EUAL) procedure for gynecomastia surgery. During this procedure, he uses a half-inch incision for each breast and inserts a small liposculpture tool. Using ultrasound to break up fat, he will remove excess breast tissue and associated extra fat. This technique produces excellent results with minimal recovery time.

Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

If you feel uncomfortable with your enlarged male breasts, you might make a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery. Ideal candidates have no health problems that would impact surgery or healing. You should avoid any nicotine-containing products or be prepared to stop using these several weeks before surgery. Most men will need to be at least sixteen years old and preferably eighteen before having gynecomastia surgery.

What are the Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery offers many benefits for men of all ages who have struggled with this condition. Many men enjoy:

  • Improved self-confidence
  • Freedom to wear fitted shirts
  • Ability to go shirtless without discomfort
  • Relief from teasing or unwanted attention

These benefits will last since the removed fat, and breast tissue will not grow back. However, remaining fat tissue in the area can enlarge if you gain weight, resulting in the appearance of larger breasts. Maintaining a consistent weight makes sure your results stay the way you want them.

What is Recovery Like From Gynecomastia Surgery?

With the minimally invasive EUAL technique, you may be able to return to work within a day or two. You will wear a compression garment under your clothes for two weeks to encourage a smoother, more masculine chest. After about a week, you can resume most activities, including general exercise.

Professional and very experienced. Highly recommend Dr Vitolo. Will be going back!
